In just three months since its creation, the MAPScholarship has already awarded $3,000 to applicants.
The Multimedia Arts Performance Scholarship (MAPS) was created to award graduating high school students with the opportunity to pursue their passion for the arts after high school.
Founders of the MAPScholarship, Melonie Vanderpool and Jovan Conde teamed with The iWiLL Campaign to raise funds for the scholarship as well as organize an event that would showcase the importance of the arts in our communities and in our youth. On March 29th 2019, "A Night of Black Excellence" Gala exhibited just that. With live performances by the Nue Road Band, dancers, local artwork for silent auction, scholarship giveaways, and more, the event delivered on the term, Black Excellence.
This year's theme for applicants was Film. Students were asked to create a 5-8 minute video depicting what Black Excellence means to them. The submissions were tear-jerking to say the least. The thought of rewarding them [the applicants] with the opportunity to pursue their passion for the arts after graduation while also having them research and reflect on the prominence of their heritage and culture was a reward in itself.
